Visitor Tips

Essential tips for your off-grid adventure on 180 private mountain acres.

🐦

The Best Thing to Do Is Nothing

Seriously — make a cup of tea, settle into the porch, and watch the hummingbirds fight. They are territorial, acrobatic, and far better entertainment than anything in town. If they're not enough, Hickory is 20 minutes away: restaurants, antique stores, shopping, a science center with a freshwater aquarium, and lake swimming.

🎒

Pack Everything You Need

This is a true off-grid experience — no electricity, no WiFi, no potable water. Bring all drinking and cooking water, your own bedding (sheets, blankets, pillows), a headlamp, and any food you want to cook. The nearest full grocery store (Walmart) is about 20 minutes away — stock up before you head up.

🚗

Vehicle Requirements

A high-clearance 4WD vehicle is recommended to drive directly to the campsite. If you have a standard vehicle, you can park at the bottom of the property and hike the scenic 1/4-mile trail in. Plan accordingly — carrying gear on the hike in is part of the adventure.

🌟

The Stargazing Is Exceptional

With no electricity and 180 acres of mountain wilderness, the light pollution here is near zero. The Milky Way is visible on clear nights. Step outside well after dark, let your eyes adjust, and you'll see one of the best skies in the Carolinas. Avoid using phone screens for 20 minutes for full dark adaptation.

🥾

Explore Wilson Creek

Wilson Creek Wild & Scenic River Area is 30 minutes away and one of the best hiking destinations in western NC. 75+ miles of trails, multiple waterfalls, and excellent trout fishing. Pick up a trail map at the visitor center and go on a weekday to avoid weekend crowds.

🔦

Come Prepared for Off-Grid Living

Solar lighting on site is soft and atmospheric — not bright enough for cooking or reading. Bring a good headlamp or lantern. For cooking, charcoal is available for the grill; bring your own food and utensils. A portable water filter is a useful backup if you run low on drinking water.

🍂

Best Seasons

Late spring through fall is ideal — summer nights are cool at elevation and perfect for fire pit evenings. Fall foliage (October) is spectacular on the surrounding ridges. Winter visits are possible but require extra preparation; check conditions before coming in December–March.
